Monsoon Wedding
Monsoon Wedding, a Hindi produced film, follows the arranged marriage between Aditi and Hemant, who lives in Houston. This film is very strong in that it does a good job of keeping the audience entertained, while also remaining seemingly true to the actual culture in which these characters exist. In effect the actors are portrayed in such a way to remain loyal to the local culture, but at the same time they show the cultural shift that the people are currently experiencing. The final results are characters and a storyline that are not only enjoyable but also believable. Monsoon Wedding, like most Hindi movies, incorporates local song and dance routines into the movie. However, in Monsoon Wedding this is done in a way that feels natural to the viewer, as opposed to Hindi movie like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which break out completely from the storyline, which takes away from realism of the film. The once again contributes to the local feel of the film, but also accounting for the current globalization of that culture. Because of these, already discussed, topics I feel this is a great movie which makes a strong realistic stance on the issue of global and local films. It is important for a film to represent the local qualities of its people in order to portray a realistic view to the global audience. But at the same time a film maker can be caught between doing this and creating a movie that appeals to the rest of the world. I feel this film maker has found a desirable and realistic medium between creating a truly local film, which show the local qualities which in reality are going through changes as an effect globalization.

I agree with your opinions on the culture shown within the movie. The culture is definitely shown and the storyline, as you stated, is very interesting but not surreal. The actors play a very life like part. The culture shown being shown is very similar to the culture in life. Another point I believe that could of been brought up about culture is the difference between the roles of males and females. The roles women played within this society were very limited within society. Also, the social structure that is shown through monsoon wedding could have been talked about. These are just a couple other topics that were interesting. The response brought out many good points about the style of the director and the actors. In addition, I agree with your last comment about the director finding a good medium between two qualities of film.
Other than one or two grammatical errors this blog was pretty good. It gave a very general view to the movie which allowed you to incorporate the different ideas discussed in class. The talk about how the film seems to flow without being disrupted by the occasional song and dance routine. You incorporated things that are specific to the director and her style of film but also Bollywood films in general. Overall I thought this was a very detailed and informative blog.
I like how you compared Monsoon wedding to other similar Indian films and used a broader view to analyze the film. But in doing so you were not able to write about some of the cultural and social issues such as the differences between the classes. Perhaps you could go from a broad look to a more focused look at one issue that you found important. Other than that I found your post to be fair.
